Components

As listed in the rig record, top to bottom.

  1. Main line (often with a shock leader for heavy-sinker casts) to a fish-finder sinker slide or fixed high-low arrangement
  2. Pyramid sinker
  3. Leader to one or two hooks

Setup

Hook
Circle hook strongly preferred for bait-soaking in the surf, sized to bait and target — 3/0–7/0 is a common range for drum/striper-scale surf bait.
Weight
Pyramid sinker, sized to hold bottom against the specific surf/current conditions of the day — this is the one setting where under-weighting is a genuine, common mistake, since surf current can be stronger than it looks from the beach.
Leader
A shock leader is standard practice for a hard overhead cast with a heavy sinker — see the Leaders guide's own Shock Leader entry.

How to fish it

Cast out past the breakers, place the rod in a sand spike, and watch the tip for a bite — the standard bait-soaking approach to surf fishing for drum, striped bass, and bluefish.

When to use it

  • Open Atlantic beach on a rising tide, cast into the trough or just past the bar
  • Spring and fall drum, bluefish, and striped bass runs
  • Enough surf to move bait but not so much that four ounces will not hold

Common mistakes

  • Casting with too light a shock leader for the sinker weight, risking a snapped line/cast-off sinker — a real safety issue for anyone nearby, not just a lost rig
  • A hard overhead surf cast with a heavy sinker is a real projectile-hazard situation — always check your surroundings before casting, and use an appropriate shock leader.
