Look for

A bright red or orange crescent bordering the black ear flap — the key tell versus bluegill (solid black ear flap, no color break) and redear sunfish (larger, more uniformly red-bordered flap with no cheek streaks)
Wavy blue-green stripes on the cheek, and an orange-speckled olive body with 7-8 faint dark vertical bands
