Choose the place for them, not for you
Pick a spot with parking, restrooms, shade or a breeze, and small fish that bite often. Piers and city park shorelines are far better first choices than a jetty.
Plan for ninety minutes
Leave while everyone is still having fun. A short good trip creates the request to go again; a long hot one ends the hobby.
Safety basics
Life jackets near any water, pinched-barb or small hooks, eye protection when casting is happening nearby, and a rule that only adults handle toothy fish.
